Sènsa

Performance by Paul Maheke and Melika Ngombe Kolongo

August 30, 2019 - 6PM (duration : 20 minutes)
Tour Panorama - 3rd floor, Friche la Belle de Mai

Paul Maheke will present an excerpt from Sènsa, an independent project but parallel to this exhibition. This ongoing performance and research, created in collaboration with Melika Ngombe Kolongo (Nkisi), combines sound, dance, and light. Its first complete public presentation will take place during Performa 19 in New York next fall. Drawing on research into cosmic sounds and the concepts of prediction and vibration central to Bantu-Kongo cosmologies, Sènsa plays with motifs of appearance and disappearance, attempting to articulate, through subtle abstraction, different tropes of representation and identity.

Paul Maheke’s work has recently been featured in solo exhibitions at Galerie Sultana, Paris; Vleeshal Center for Contemporary Art (2019); Kevin Space, Vienna; Chisenhale Gallery, London; and in the 6th edition of the Ateliers de Rennes, Contemporary Art Biennale at Galerie Art et Essai in Rennes (2018). His performances have recently been presented at the 58th Venice Biennale; ICA Miami (2019); Block Universe, London (2019) in collaboration with Melika Ngombe Kolongo (Nkisi); Centre Pompidou, Paris, as part of the “Move” festival (2018); and at Baltic Triennial 13, Tallinn (2018). Upcoming projects and performances will be shown at Performa 19, New York, in November. Paul Maheke is currently nominated for the 21st Prix Ricard.
