Portrait of Lounis Baouche

In residence at Triangle-Asterides from May 2 to 31, 2023, then at the Cité Internationale des Arts from May 31 to July 31, 2023, as part of the residency program for Algerian artists designed in collaboration between the Cité Internationale des arts, Friche la Belle de Mai and the Camargo Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Culture.

Born in 1994. A graduate of the Azazga Regional School of Fine Arts, he lives and works in Béjaïa (Algeria).
In his work, Baouche plays with dystopian concepts that he merges with the power dynamics that govern the human relationships, mainly those of authority, oppression and resistance. He pays particular attention to all forms of collective imagination and the elements that shape them, dissecting the key actors and the archetypes that influence their construction. These archetypes are often represented in his work in the form of naive characters, sometimes as tattered bodies placed on plaster backgrounds. For Lounis Baouche, it is necessary not only a form, but also colors and archaic models like those found in the remains of ancestral civilizations, such as cave paintings, sculptures, ceramics and other kinds of evocative remains to both ephemeral and constancy. His pieces are created in performative and conscious gestures, while being aware that they are ultimately doomed to collapse and transform into vestiges of posterity, His work is multidisciplinary and includes painting, drawing, ceramics and installation.
