P. Robert’s Perfect Mastery of Oil Painting by E. Bentz
P. Robert stretches the canvas, applies the sizing, then sketches out a drawing. She moves the brush back and forth, applying thin, malleable layers. These fine layers of diluted washes of colour and various glazes give the painting its profound subtlety. P. Robert reveals her skill through the precision of detail. With small accumulated strata, she emphasizes the particularities of this hair, blond hair barbarically thrust into a pair of trousers. P. Robert works her brush, layer upon layer, building up the hair, the wig, inside the trousers, in accumulated strata. P. Robert has a frenzy for bucco-dental detail; she smooths the wet sheen on a tongue emerging from a grimacing mouth.
Detail of this burst vein in the eyeball, detail of the coarse wrinkle, indecent grimace, chuckling mouth and crooked tooth. Detail of the blond hair of the wig in the trousers, detail of the dangling cigarette, gaping nostril, hairless torso and emerging beard. Detail of the painful sunburn on milky skin, of the punch and the gun. Masquerades, accessories, eye masks, a reddened eye caught by a bad flash. It chatters. It ripples. It gesticulates. It cavorts. It sniffs. It oozes. It quivers. It tumbles. It lashes. It chuckles.
