Opération collectionnite

Exhibition-auction by Matthieu Clainchard

Like many artists, Matthieu Clainchard collects objects and works that inspire him. In connection with his exhibition It’s like a jungle sometimes. It makes me wonder how I keep from going under in the spring of 2010 at the Galerie de la Friche la Belle de Mai under the auspices of Triangle France, Matthieu Clainchard presented Opération collectionnite at the Damien Leclère auction house.

This residency in a business context was made possible by the Ateliers de l’Euroméditerranée, Marseille Provence European Capital of Culture 2013, the Triangle France association, and the Damien Leclère auction house.
Developed as a residency in a business setting, the project, carried out in collaboration with the staff of the Leclère auction house, took the form of “an exhibition in the shape of an auction.” Opération collectionnite showcased several of the artist’s works related to the concept of collection, but more importantly, various objects from his personal collection, discoveries made in the reserves of the auction house, as well as “the double of a fraction of [his] collection” of contemporary art.

The artist, who enjoys blurring the lines and hierarchies, presented himself as a producer, collector, and curator of an exhibition where the “objects,” each with a very different status within his work, were equally significant.

Started at the beginning of the year, the project culminated on April 12, 2010, with a brief exhibition, an auction, and the production of a catalog that included the works presented along with critical texts by Gallien Déjean and Dorothée Dupuis.
