Triangle-Astérides is hosting, in the presence of artist and former resident Dina Mimi, a screening of The Melancholy of this Useless Afternoon, Chapters 1 and 2, in Atelier-Assemblée.
“The Melancholy of this Useless Afternoon” unfolds through two chapters reflecting on the role of the fugitive and the smuggler. Chapter I layers images of birdsong competitions, revolutionary songs from Oman, Yemen and Palestine with a narrative on movement, loss, separation, and revolutionary practice. Chapter II documents the practice of bird smuggling and the part the human body plays in this act.
The screening will be followed by a reading of Chapter 3 by Dina Mimi, as well as a discussion with the audience.
Dina Mimi lives and works between Palestine and the Netherlands. Dina Mimi’s artistic research revolves around movement, through video and sound experimentation and collection, performance and textual work. In her practice, the body, the expression of its right to exist and its determination as a site of resistance take a central place that is constantly renewed. In this sense, her work examines the role of the body-force in public space in Palestine. Dina Mimi’s recent research tends to consider protest as a performance. Dina Mimi is particularly fond of the video sequences she gleans, abandoned and decontextualized. Her editing plays with opacity and unveiling, revealing realities that escape and narratives that are constantly reimagined and reconstructed. Dina Mimi graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem in 2016, followed by a Master of Arts in Public Spheres at ECAV (École cantonale d’art du Valais, Switzerland) in 2018.
