Initiated by a collective of artists at La Friche la Belle de Mai, Astérides has developed by committing to supporting emerging artists across a broad territory, fostering connections between artists and artistic scenes through the creation and experimentation of residency programs, exhibitions, publications, and public events.
The publication [Vingt ans après…], released in April 2014, brings together reflective texts on the notions of residency and creation, as well as previously unpublished interviews with the four founding artists of Astérides (Claire Maugeais, Sandrine Raquin, Gilles Barbier, Jean-Christophe Nourisson). Works created by artists supported through Astérides’ residency programs over the past twenty years offer a journey through individual practices and serve as traces of their passage.
The exhibition, following a pop-up format, echoes the publication. Pop-up is a group show that also reactivates the dimension of time, presenting a selection of works created during residencies at Astérides. The exhibition also provides an opportunity to produce and show new works. It is not intended as a thematic presentation, but rather as a display of singular practices and trajectories, all of which intersect.
Astérides positions itself as a place for the making of art, for reflection and dissemination—one that has found its resonance within the field of contemporary art.
Starfish – “Asteroidea first appeared in the Ordovician. The archaic group Somasteroidea is considered the phyletic precursor of the class. It includes animals with a broad central disc surrounded by short, stubby petaloid arms, without grooves (non-locomotor?)” – Encyclopædia Universalis
