For their exhibition The Mad Doctor at the Friche gallery, any evocation of science fiction has clearly been surpassed by reality itself. What mind could have conceived this air-conditioned metropolis, with tangled communication networks and “utopian” monuments celebrating entertainment (Russian constructivism, exemplified by Tatlin’s tower, “symbolizing humanity’s march toward progress,” seems here to have been overtaken by Disney)? It’s no surprise that in this setup, “first aid huts” and a mysterious Black Machine foreshadow a catastrophe: following Ulrich Beck’s assertion, the “risk society” is preparing and organizing itself based on the certainty of an impending disaster.
