Anne Laure Sacriste

2003, 2004

Anne Laure Sacriste is a Triangle France Resident in 2003 and 2004. The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not allow for the determination of the exact dates or the duration of this residency.

Anne Laure Sacriste was born in 1970 in Paris (FR), she lives and works in Paris (FR)

Until recently, Anne Laure Sacriste never went to the Louvre. What was the point, when one is a contemporary painter, in filling oneself with outdated influences, seemingly a bit limited for the energetic young artist Sacriste has been since graduating from art school in 96? Painting, she told herself, must draw inspiration from new issues, current influences, open horizons, and not from a burdensome tradition and questions linked to a mimesis no longer really relevant in this time of proliferating images.

The young woman was instead interested in cinema, a contemporary mode of image production that also questions the viewer/image relationship, but in a dynamic relation to memory, framing, and point of view. Painting as a captor of a dynamic narrative, interested in the off-screen, in the subjectivity of representation: images open to the outside world.

It is then with surprise that in recent years she has detected in her practice deep affiliations with Ingres, Poussin, and Caspar Friedrich, whom she once carefully avoided confronting with her gaze: they are there, irreversibly embedded in her painter’s eye, and above all, in her artist’s eye.

That outdated vision of the “painter-artist” fascinated by Romanticism and the old masters’ canvases, she rejected it: the desire to make “modern” painting consumed everything, and violently pushed away any reference.
