Caroline Mesquita

Session #3
20 September to 20 December

Caroline Mesquita was born in 1989 in Brest (FR), she lives and works in Marseille (FR).

Caroline Mesquita explores the vitality and complexity of group behavior in most of her sculptural installations and works. Raw material provides the spark that animates her narrative engagement with notions of religion, embodiment, transformation, sensuality, and sociability. Mesquita’s works are dark, patinated, and roughly textured through an oxidation process. With this technique, she manipulates metal as a form of painting. What was once bright, reflective, and polished is cut, ground, welded, melted, and oxidized to reveal its interior. These material transformations create a framework for storytelling about human experience and relationships between individuals.

Caroline Mesquita graduated from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2013 and studied at the Mountain School of Arts in Los Angeles in the spring of 2014. Her recent solo exhibitions have been held at Kunstverein Langenhagen, Germany; Jupiter Artland, Edinburgh, Scotland; Les Bains-Douches, Alençon, France (2014); and 1m3 in Lausanne, Switzerland (2013). Her work has also been included in various group exhibitions, including Europe Europe at Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo, Norway (2014); The Space Between Us at Fahrenheit, Los Angeles (2014); Memory Palaces at Carlier-Gebauer, Berlin (2014); La Vie Matérielle, 15th Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard Prize, Paris (2013); and Rob Pruitt’s Flea Market at La Monnaie de Paris, Paris (2012).
