Catie de Balmann

1997

Catie de Balmann is a Triangle France Resident in 1997. The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not allow for the determination of the exact dates or the duration of this residency in 1997.

Catie de Balmann was born in 1966 in Tarbes (FR), she lives and works in Paris (FR).

“My work develops at the intersection of various fields: art, environmental responsibility, and social issues. It is part of the landscape and fits into the daily life where I live at the time of my research, while incorporating the people around me. I invest in people; their comings and goings define the space that interests me. People are both free markers and (trans)porters of landscapes and (protective) cultures. I work on (re)coverings, linings, and contextual patterns. The space I want to “conquer” lies at the border between “home” and public space. This leads me to consider openings such as doors, windows, social networks, telephones, etc. I choose to use things that already exist. For example, by (re)drawing or coloring buildings, to which I give a voice. With their inhabitants, I imagine extensions and comings and goings between the interior and exterior. The announcements and messages I send out in these perspectives are tableaux that I imagine to be mobile, like those of arrivals and departures at train stations. My proposals form resets. They are recyclings of meaning and materials, forms of doubles, inverses, reverse paths. They sometimes involve the co-creation of objects (pretexts) closely related to clothing/shelter, protection, and lining. They focus on the shifts, shifts, and transitions that occur between undressing and dressing, motif and identity, skin and landscape, interior and exterior, private (even intimate) and public space.” - Catie de Balmann
