Christelle Familiari

1998

Christelle Familiari is a Triangle France Resident in 1998. The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not allow for the determination of the exact dates or the duration of this residency in 1998.

Christelle Familiari was born in 1972 in Niort (FR), she lives and works in Rennes (FR).

“The work of Christelle Familiari has nothing to do with speed, trajectory, or distance traveled. It arises from patience—one might almost call it an ‘obstinate patience’—from repetition, and from the artist’s empirical way of conceiving creation not as a linear or progressive process. Earlier works thus regularly return, either ‘augmented’ or, on the contrary, ‘reduced.’ A sculpture reappears, but removed from its pedestal. A performance is replayed through a series of lithographs. A paper collage acquires a third dimension and becomes a large resin sculpture. Unfired clay pieces are placed on skateboards in an exhibition; two years later, the same forms are discovered in an installation, slightly enlarged, fired, glazed, and arranged on the floor. A layer of earth forgotten in an old bucket left lying around in a studio is retrieved and then wrapped in a strip of plaster to form a small, round sculpture. The work thus unfolds in loops, variations, reinterpretations, in constant back-and-forth movements. Christelle Familiari builds her work to the scale of her body, her energy, her endurance, her movements, her favored gestures, and her field of experience.” — Elisabeth Wetterwald
