Christian Newby

Session #3
20 September to 20 December

Christian Newby was born in 1979, he lives and works in Glasgow (GB).

“The majority of my work is centered on the use of theater, or at least the confined framework of spatial representation, which allows films, drawings, and sculptures to function together in unison—neutralizing any form of narrative structure’s rotation within tableaux where mood, ambiguity, form, and language fluctuate.

What I attempt here is to create a liminal space, consisting of a poetic or imaginary environment that remains akin in its execution to a constructed spectacle—yet one that is conceivable and viable in reality. It is also about staging an internal theater of the self, one that is more influenced by psychology—a theater that openly allows the spectator to engage in malleable associations and connotations.

I want to affirm and remind the viewer that what they are seeing are people performing simple yet strange tasks. Magic, in these acts, plays the role of documenting an event tied to a kind of ritual; the objects used on screen or within the actual space function as props that foster a psychological space that is both masculine and vulnerable.” – Christian Newby
