Hugo Hopping

Residency as part of our international exchange with SixtyEight Art Institute, Copenhague.
Hugo Hopping was born in Mexico City (MX) in 1974 and is originally from Los Angeles (US), he currently lives and works in Copenhagen (DK).
Hugo Hopping is an artist, writer, and curator whose work is shaped by the legacy of conceptual art and aesthetics. His practice continuously pushes disciplinary boundaries, creating hybrid and often collaborative artistic projects that intersect with art, architecture, and design. One such project is The Winter Office, which he co-founded in 2010 with Danish architect and urban planner Johanna Ferrer Guldager.
In 2015, he co-founded the SixtyEight Art Institute in Copenhagen with Iben Bach Elmstrøm and Christopher Sand-Iversen—an organization dedicated to producing exhibitions, knowledge, and cultural projects, including The Curatorial Thing, a summer residency program connecting artists and curators.
In 2017, he and Christopher Sand-Iversen launched the publishing house Really Simple Syndication Press, through which he edits and publishes works by Lehman Brothers, Peter Brandt, Helene Nymann, Liv Schulman, Sidsel Nelund, Julie Sass, David Lau, and many others.
Hugo Hopping holds a degree from the Fine Arts Department of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts, 2005). His work has been exhibited in events such as Manifesta 13 and Les Parallèles du Sud in Marseille, France.
Thursday, November 18, 6:00–6:45 PM: Public Talk with Hugo Hopping
As part of the open studios at Triangle – Astérides, artist Hugo Hopping will discuss the multiple creative and cultural intersections inherent in his practice, bridging two continental perspectives on cultural production.
Hopping is behind various initiatives and associations where his artistic, curatorial, writing, and design projects can be seen as part of a contextual practice. This approach stems from his experience with conceptual art, collective methodologies, and collaborative exchanges in art and knowledge sharing.
This talk will be an opportunity to explore the different projects he has developed between Los Angeles, Copenhagen, and Marseille, focusing on the creation of non-ideal institutions and artistic practice in a broader sense.
