It has long been the case that a line, a square, a circle assembled in a certain order inevitably evokes a pre-existing configuration from the history of painting.
Three parallel lines, for example, are first and foremost a mark of sportswear and can no longer pass as an anonymous figure.
(Hugo Schüwer-Boss recently reinterpreted a number of these on the edge or surface of monochrome canvases in various colors. One of them, depicting three vertical blue zips on white, is titled OM, which of course can be understood in two ways.)
