Joshua Schwebel

01 to 01 January 2014

Joshua Schwebel is an Astérides Resident in 2014. The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not allow for the determination of the exact dates or the duration of this residency in 2014.

Joshua Schwebel is currently in residence as part of an exchange program between Fonderie Darling (Montreal, CA) and Astérides.

As a conceptual artist, Joshua Schwebel performs symbolic gestures through insertions, displacements, and détournements. His work seeks to stage uncertainty and doubt by relocating the site of encounter with art. His practice is fundamentally non-commercial. The notion of counterfeit plays an important role in Schwebel’s work. He handcrafts reproductions that are then circulated within economies that rely on a single, authentic original. By blurring the contextual distinction between objects of value and those deemed worthless, his insertions challenge the foundations of our habits and convictions.

Joshua Schwebel holds a Master’s degree from NSCAD University (2008) and a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from Concordia University (2006). Recent exhibitions and projects have taken place at WhereWhere Artpace in Beijing, China; at Artspace in Peterborough, Ontario (the solo exhibition [Caché], 2013); in Havana, Cuba (the independent project Currencies, 2012); in Montreal (the anonymous public intervention project Popularity, 2012); as well as elsewhere in Canada and internationally.
