“The objects I create are fragile. Some break when handled, others only seem as though they might when installed. Since the material nature of the work involves the possibility of breaking, this introduces a performative element to the sculptures. The pieces are ephemeral, tied to time. They engage in a dialogue about site specificity because they have clearly been broken and then reformed. They are remade in response to the technical specificities of the site, as well as in an attempt to ‘read’ the site in every possible way.
The objects bear the marks of their making. Paper-thin ceramic pieces are created, broken, repaired, and then displayed. Some reveal scars where they have been shattered and mended. Plaster pieces are held together with rubber bands. They appear in the gallery space, within the viewer’s field of vision, and seem always on the verge of collapse.” – Kirsty Roberts
