Maria Thereza Alves was born in 1961 in São Paulo (BR) and lives and works between Naples (IT) and Berlin (DE).
Maria Thereza Alves’ artistic career is inseparable from her political activism, whether in support of ecology, indigenous minority rights, or territorial and decolonization struggles. Born in Brazil during the dictatorship, her family was forced to move to New York, where Maria Thereza Alves pursued her studies. In the 1980s, she co-founded the Partido Verde [Green Party] in Brazil; it was also during this period that she held her first exhibitions. Her work has been shown around the world, including at numerous international events such as, most recently, the Guangzhou Triennial in 2008, documenta 13 in Kassel in 2012, the Sharjah Biennial in 2016, and the São Paulo Biennial in 2017. In 2018, she was awarded the Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics.
In 2020, Maria Thereza Alves is participating in the Sydney Biennale.
