Martin Bureau

2000, 2001

Martin Bureau is an Astérides Resident in 2000 and 2001. The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not allow for the determination of the exact dates or the duration of this residency in 2000 and 2001.

Martin Bureau was born in St-Ubald (CA)

Painting, video installation and documentary cinema constitute vectors allowing me to structure critical thought where social issues inherent to geopolitics, the environment and art meet. Since the late 1990s, although becoming multidisciplinary, my practice finds its sources in painting. Fundamentally permanent and timeless, opposed to the technological evanescence in which we live, painting represents the challenge of fixing meaning in a single image. In cinema, strongly influenced by the direct approach of documentary cinema, I nevertheless distance myself from it, seeking to manipulate the visual and sound codes of reality. Video installation in a way links visual art and cinema. It allows me to delinearize the moving image and to create an experience that appeals to wandering and sensory perceptions in space.

We live in the Anthropocene era. Every gesture we make, every element we have, contributes to the sedimentation of our great excesses. The Anthropocene is an announced catastrophe. Invested by this notion, I perceive my artistic practice as the shaping of a poetics of disaster.
