Mathilde Barrio Nuevo

01 to 01 January 2011

Mathilde Barrio Nuevo is an Astérides Resident in 2011.

The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not provide information regarding the dates or the duration of this residency.

Mathilde Barrio Nuevo was born in 1987 and lives and works in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (FR).

“My approach is defined by the appropriation of aesthetic and visual codes widely disseminated through television and cinema, particularly of the fantasy and ‘science-fiction’ genres, from the 80s and 90s. I appropriate midnight movies from the previous two decades—too old for me to have experienced them at their release—and for which the attraction to fear and excess still holds its power. Through these codes, I am especially interested in the production and manual fabrication of their ‘fictionality’: their scenes and contexts. The observation of this object/set relationship is often accompanied in my work by a fascination for their hybridization within the exhibition space, which itself becomes an improvised film set. I thus play with the fine space separating the real from the fictitious, not as a boundary but as a territory to be reoccupied.” - Mathilde Barrio Nuevo
