“I choose certain abandoned buildings for my paintings. Over time, they have lost their original identity and have become strange habitable terrains. Useless yet present, these remnants of architecture can be considered as back-places, escaping our daily consciousness to exist in their (in)visible absence from our environment. My paintings are thus nostalgic evocations of these surviving buildings, between subsistence and existence. Their erasure and decay are, for me, intangible signs of their strange beauty. My goal is to capture their fleeting intimacy, saving them by bringing them into the eternity of painting. I aim to go beyond our normalized concept of beauty and offer an alternative aesthetic experience.” - Matthew Atkinson
