Pierre Labat

01 to 01 January 2006

Pierre Labat is an Astérides Resident in 2006.

The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not provide information regarding the dates or the duration of this residency.

Pierre Labat was born in 1977 in Auray (FR), he lives and works in Bordeaux (FR)

Oscillating between highly referential minimal art and the everyday world, Pierre Labat offers a body of work that is not the illustration of architectural prowess. Everything unfolds through a sculptural gesture that is simple and pragmatic. The meeting of a wall and a ceiling invites us to move around it, to look up, to play with verticality. Suspended and massive, this white wall panel demands focus, a balance to be maintained. Somewhere between the evocation of a projection screen and the movement of a wave, Pierre Labat places the gesture at the center of his work.

These sculpture-architectures have already been noted in works such as Dum-Dum (2008), a double incision into a wall that borders on the miraculous, and Space Between (2006), a white column cut on a slant that loses all function as a support. Sensation and phenomenon reach their peak. The deployment of his works in space aims to touch upon a new kind of suprematism—one of whiteness, of form within space. Constantly engaging with the third dimension, Pierre Labat’s works nonetheless insinuate themselves into a potential reflection on the pictorial plane, its history, and its mystique.
