Shirley Bruno

Session #2
01 May to 25 July

Shirley Bruno was born in 1980 in New York (US), she lives and works in New York (US) and Jacmel (HT).

Shirley Bruno’s films and video works draw from her Haitian heritage preserving and radicalizing her ancestral traditions and mythology. She creates modern myths that expose the slippery, impermanent line between the material and spiritual world, between documentary and fiction, collective memory and history. She investigates the everyday, the Sacred, and the intimate violence in the things left unsaid and mark us generation after generation. Her films often take their point of departure from neglected histories as well as from rumors, dreams, superstitious beliefs, memories both real and imagined.

Shirley Bruno is a filmmaker and artist, graduate of London Film School and Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains, her works at the border of cinema, animation, installation, and sound has been presented at major contemporary art events and film festivals including Rencontres International Paris / Berlin, Palais de Tokyo, Villa Medici, Montreal intercultural arts, European House of Photography (Paris), FRAC Dunkerque, Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Her film Tezen (2016) is part of the collection of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (France) and the Leal Rios Foundation (Lisbon). In August 2019, Shirley Bruno was programmed by Triangle France - Astérides in a duo exhibition with Josèfa Ntjam, Up in the clouds, who says blue?.
