Yin Qi

1996

Yin Qi is an Astérides Resident in 1996. The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not allow for the determination of the exact dates or the duration of this residency in 1996.

Yin QI was born in 1962 in Beijing (CN), he lives and works between Beijing and Paris (FR)

Yin Qi’s painting is anything but innocent. It is deeply rooted in his culture.

His large-format canvases most often depict dog heads or empty domestic spaces. Yet his true subject is a quest for plenitude, for the exactness of the gesture in the instant where the dizzying act of painting is played and replayed.

The oil paint, applied in thick layers, is combed by hand in a rotating motion, carving it into contiguous circles without distinction between figure and background, like the surface of a Zen garden. What matters to the artist is that through this repeated movement, which allows for no correction, he achieves a fusion between intention and gesture, in a state of total and serene commitment.
