Sol in the Dark

Mawena Yehouessi

On the occasion of the first cycle of programming offered on Bruise Magazine, entitled “Archives, Narratives and Collective Practices”, Mawena Yehouessi presents the film-collage Sol in the Dark. Throughout the month of March and in the form of a mini-series, five episodes were shown one by one each week.

“Chimeras, flesh, rumors and pixels.Sol in the Dark is a collective and dense, multi-layered collage film(s) that hauls in several chapters the figure of Lascar. Not only or quite a rascal or suburban, Lascar is one of those body-fetish-avatar: a character both imaginary and deeply rooted in reality. As an epicene character referring to BIPOC youth from the French outskirts since the 1990’s as much as to Southeast Asian seamxn and soldiers enrolled on European ships between the 16th and 20th century, or even to Sun Ra & John Coney’s Space is the Place (1974)…: ‘Lascar’ stands as the symbol and symptom or avatar for collective selves and fugitive genealogies. Or else a tribute to the imaginaries of Rap, afrofuturism, black study and post-internet aesthetics.

Co-produced by M.Y and Spectre Productions (Olivier Marboeuf), Sol in the Dark is a cinematographic and multimedia project whose ambition is to generate new protocols of co-creation as synonyms of alternative modes of coexistence. From the writing of the script to the shooting, post-production and broadcasting, it has associated about 20 artists, confirmed, students and amateurs, to retrace together - in a poetic and speculative way - the Myth of ‘Lascar’.*
