Art+Feminism is a rhizomatic campaign aimed at improving the coverage of women in the arts on Wikipedia and at encouraging contributions written by women.
The issue of gender on Wikipedia is well documented: following a 2011 survey, Wikimedia found that less than 13% of contributions were made by women. Several reasons have been put forward to explain this gap: some attribute it to unequal access to leisure time, the ways in which gendered socialization shapes public behavior, and the confrontational tone of many discussion pages. The tangible result of this disparity is clear: the content is skewed due to the lack of women’s participation. Many articles about women who have played important roles in art history are still missing from Wikipedia.
We invite people of all gender identities and expressions—particularly trans and cis women—to address this absence by taking part in collaborative edit-a-thons, where participants focus on articles related to art and feminism. We are committed to creating a positive and safe space for all participants.
No prior Wikipedia editing experience is required. Training workshops for beginners will be offered. Women who identify as such are especially encouraged to participate. This is a feminist event.
