As a prelude: This exhibition of Claire Tabouret’s work is the culmination of a residency undertaken in Marseille at Astérides between January and June 2011. The artist revisits works produced during that time from the perspective of her current studio in Los Angeles, bringing them into dialogue with recent paintings and monotypes.
These new pieces—large-scale works that engage with the architecture of the space—will host earlier works mounted on their reverse: a way of layering different moments in time while simultaneously dividing the space. This unusual arrangement of fronts and backs will also invite visitors to reflect on their own position in space—what they are facing, and what they are turning away from—just as the artist does in both of her locations, between land and sea.
Claire Tabouret’s new works explore the ambition of heading west: toward citrus groves, wide open spaces, fame, and, of course, the gold it promises. This exhibition compresses time, drawing equally on personal experience and social history, and forges a link between two very different semi-fictional places, both situated at the water’s edge.
This presentation is also unique in that it is accompanied by another exhibition in the same space, titled Cash for Gold like Smoke for Mirrors and Land for Sea, which features works by Paul + Marlene Kos, Takeshi Murata, and Mungo Thomson, among other artifacts.
