Darren Roshier

01 January to 30 June 2014

Darren Roshier is an Astérides Resident in 2014.

Darren Roshier is supported by the city of Vevey during his residency.

“My work is characterized by various attempts to play with the frame. This frame can be the institution, the art world, or even the very essence of any creative process. Through my pieces—which I also readily describe as commentaries on the frame—I question the cognitive understanding of an artwork that is, by definition, discursive. Language, text, and discourse are recurring themes in many of my projects. By questioning the viewer’s cognitive understanding of an artistic proposal, I contextualize it. Beyond directly addressing and questioning the viewer’s comprehension, I also reflect on the memory a viewer might retain of the project, as well as the perception of a viewer encountering only the documentation of my work. The work is thus contextualized both in the moment it is shown and within the evolution of my own artistic trajectory. This new framework allows me to exemplify—through my personal development in the art world—the evolution of a young artist’s career. This is what I call auto-historicism.

Beyond these quite serious reflections, I always try to conceive my projects with a sense of humor and absurdity. The various dualities that emerge from my pieces—both failed and successful, well- and poorly-executed, existing between presentation and representation—allow my work to occupy a space of questioning and exploration, rather than a clearly defined or rigid stance.” – Darren Roshier

Darren Roshier’s work is on display during the exhibition Enfin la résidence !, 2014.
