Guillaume Aubry is a happy artist.
(…) Is it because his background in architecture frees him from frustration with making and with the object itself, that his art tends toward the non-objectual—even the immaterial?
By focusing on the narrative potential of a space or a place, he imagines the best possible scenario. An artist without a studio, he conceives his works in a café or elsewhere, using materials found in situ, and entrusts their realization to teams. A project leader in all circumstances, what interests him is the subtle activation of space.
Happy? Happy when he travels… One year in Tokyo, where he studied urban sociology, then two in Beijing in an artists’ village. He lives through residencies, here and there. Putting himself in that kind of danger that comes from not being at home, in order to shape his thinking.
Happy? Because more than anything, he loves working with others. Building teams, intelligent collaboration, working in harmony with an artists’ collective, friendship or simply generational connection, conviviality. Generating an energy, an exchange—that, for him, allows the work to retain the memory of the encounter…
