Victoire Barbot

01 to 01 January 2016

Victoire Barbot is an Astérides Resident in 2016. The archives of Triangle-Astérides do not allow for the determination of the exact dates or the duration of this residency in 2016.

“My sculptures do not originate from preparatory drawings, nor from mental images or any other objects. My resources range from frames to pedestals, through grids, rails, brackets, but also shelves, display cases, and fabrics. These are materials of shelving that I analyze through a process of flattening, close to inventory. Ordinarily useful to one another, I reinvent their function.

To bring forth a form, I do not seek to produce the mental image of an object but the driving image of an action, one that arises from the desire to manipulate the tools in front of me. Sculpture is the result of this stance. It is an art of experience. The action, the process of balance, replaces the past image, serving as a method to create the present.

Rarely fixed, the combined materials end up self-managing in a precarious balance. I call these assemblages Misensembles. Each element is part of the balance system, whether physical or visual. The whole is precision; even the small things are traces that testify to the genesis of the form; they are bodily aids to align, fill, hold, and re-balance. Here a needle, there a shell.

The drawings come to finalize the driving image born from the desire to manipulate the ‘left behind’. The driving image is fixed onto the paper. The final point of the process occurs with the mental boxing of the Misensembles.”
