Virgile Fraisse

Session #1
01 January to 01 April

Virgile Fraisse was born in 1990 in Paris (FR), where he lives and works.

Echoing the approach of the anthropologist, Virgile Fraisse’s work, through film and installation, delves into communication protocols. Critiquing neoliberal strategies, his films examine the cultural influences of transcontinental relations; for example, through the image of the deployment of an undersea fiber-optic cable (SEA-ME-WE, 2015), or through the mechanics of extending and absorbing Western models (as seen in Situations Suivantes, 2014, through the process of Americanization of South African communities). Therefore, how can we seize the possibilities of countering the colonization of image circulation flows? With a tone of pastiche, parodying film formats which become playing fields, characters embody contradictory positions in turn. Continuing this dialectical logic, and conceived in situ, installations evoking architectural gestures condition our physical access to information; installations urging the audience to take a stance.

Virgile Fraisse studied at Otis College (Los Angeles, 2013) and graduated with honors from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2014). His work has been exhibited in several group exhibitions, including Wicked Problem, Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseille, 2016); 61st Salon de Montrouge (Montrouge, 2016); Les Réalisateurs, Galerie Paradise (Nantes, 2016); 8 plus ou moins 2, Galerie Mansart (Paris, 2016); LOOP Festival Discovery Award (Barcelona, Madrid, Johannesburg, Istanbul, Malaga, Rubi, Athens, 2015-2016); Les Voyageurs, Palais des Beaux-Arts (Paris, 2015); Snake Road, Bolsky Gallery (Los Angeles, 2014). He is the recipient of the Video Award from the Fondation des Beaux-Arts de Paris for his film SEA-ME-WE (part 1). Virgile Fraisse is preparing a series of videos for the exhibition LABOR ZERO LABOR, Circa TV by Benjamin Valenza, Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseille, 2016). He is also preparing his first solo exhibition at Clark House Initiative, Mumbai (India, 2016) and will be part of the next Hors-Piste festival at the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, 2017).
