Convoi exceptionnel

February, 18 - March, 15, 2009, public opening on February 15, from 6PM
Galerie de la Friche Belle de Mai, La Tour, 2nd floor, 41 rue Jobin, 13003 Marseille

A collaboration between Triangle France, art center, and Astérides, artists studios.

For over ten years, Astérides and Triangle France have been offering residencies to artists whose practices engage with resolutely contemporary issues. Convoi Exceptionnel is an exhibition jointly organized by the two structures, who have given the artists carte blanche. The exhibition is an opportunity to make visible works created in the privacy of the studio, to extract works in progress, to provoke unprecedented collaborations, all in the shared perspective of the residents to spark public appreciation. Installations, paintings, performances, videos, drawings, sculptures—so many varied formal proposals that, brought directly down from the upper floors, will take their place on the 2nd floor in the exhibition spaces.

An outlet for this Convoi Exceptionnel, which will transport—though not without the risk of collisions—a large number of works reflecting very diverse lines of inquiry. Some will converge toward an absurd or burlesque vision of reality, while others will be driven by social or even geopolitical situations. The search for happiness, for sensitive beauty, will meet the staging of affective realities. The diversity of formal repertoires may reveal a choice for an economy of material means, sometimes reduced to the artist’s own body, but also more intensified, monumental formal proposals.

The multiplicity of intentions gathered on this occasion contributes to these spaces maintaining, for a time, their ability to become once again places of experimentation.

Halida Boughriet, Yann Géraud, Cigdem Mentesoglu and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye are Triangle France Residents in 2008.
